FIRE!

Fire used to be a real worry for the owners of thatched houses. This picture shows Whinwhistle Cottage in Wherwell, Hampshire, which caught fire in 2009.

Tim advised Hampshire Fire and Rescue during their Thatch Fire Safety for Hampshire Homeowners programme .  He contributed to their Thatch Information Pack and gave a series of talks on this topic in many Hampshire villages.  Hampshire Fire and Rescue deemed this programme a success because thatch fires in Hampshire reduced dramatically between 2009 & 2012.  Tim is happy to talk to individuals or communities about fire prevention.

Fire in thatched roofs usually starts on the inside.  Fortunately modern fire-detection and suppression systems minimise this worry.  When possible, we use the systems and products from the specialists, Thatching Advisory Services, such as:

  • Monitoring systems to alert you to conditions near the chimney which might cause a fire – before one starts
  • Firewalls, membranes and board systems to prevent fire spreading

Sadly, Tim has had to deal with the aftermath of several thatch fires.  One insurance company stands head and shoulders above all others in his experience, namely Playle-Russell
