A good thatched roof is waterproof, warm, and elegant. A new thatch will last between 15 and 50 years, depending on the quality of workmanship and the quality of the materials. At ftlThatching, we only use the best quality materials, and we pride ourselves on the skill of our work. We will make you a beautiful roof that will last as long as the material will.

There are three types of thatching material, each with their own properties, look and lifespan:

Water Reed

Water Reed is also known as Norfolk Reed. It has the longest life-expectancy, of 50+ years.

As well as Norfolk, it grows in many other parts of Europe such as the Carmargue, Austria, Hungary and Turkey. Each country’s reed varies in thickness and straightness, suiting it to different styles of roof.

We choose the most appropriate reed for the design and style of your roof.

Combed Wheat

Combed Wheat has a life-expectancy of 25-35 years. It is harvested and applied to the roof in a way that produces a fine, tightly packed, smooth looking effect.

We only use Combed Wheat from Devon because the soil there gives the best straw.

Long Straw

Long Straw roofs have a very distinctive look, soft and almost shaggy.  They are Tim's personal favourite.  They have characteristic pattern work around the eaves. This is essential for tightening them before cutting to shape.

Long Straw is more prone to wear and tear than other materials, but if looked after with new ridges, spar-work and patches, it has a life-expectancy of 15-25 years.

I couldn't be more pleased with your work. You arrived when you said you would, you charged what you said you would, and your craftsmanship was exemplary. Your team were friendly, polite and hard working - whatever the weather.

I have no hesitation in recommending ftlThatching.
